THE LOBBY: ALBUMS OF THE WEEK

March 13th 2007 11:15
Ahoy all you hipsters, beatnicks, and members of the criminal fringe. It’s that time again. Choose the album you want to see reviewed and give it a big ol’ vote. Nice clear votes where you precisely state you are voting for a specific album will help. Other comments are welcome, but may not be counted as votes if you if you ain’t clear, ya hear?

This week’s albums are.

1) for the money…

Pink
Pink (2006)
Boris:

Pink
(2006; Southern Lord)

Japanese metal band Boris (named after the wonder-ass Melvins tune) are known for their doomy excursions modeled on (you guessed it) the Melvins, and for influencing the current trend of epic post-rock-cum-metal heroes like Isis and Sun O))). Pink seems to lay that all to waste, with an album that takes the molten lava riffs into the garage for some heavy-as-your-momma trash rock.

2) for the show…

Murmur
Murmur (1983)
REM:

Murmur
(1983/IRS)

Before super-stardom, apocryphal AIDS rumours, hangin' with the Love-Cobains, and that whole starting to suck business, REM where quite the hip little college rock outfit. Their first album sets the stage for their jangle-folk, post-punk pop songwriting that can be gorgeously haunting when it wants to be. Yeah, the Go-Betweens did this sort of stuff first, and better, but Murmur still plants the seeds for the great band they were to become.

3) to get ready…

Who's Next
Who's Next (1971)
The Who:
Who’s Next
(1971; MCA)

There’s already been heaps said about The Who by people who actually know what they’re talking about. Still, I’ve been listening to this landmark album recently and enjoy its ballsy rock, silly synthesiser wanking, and introspective ballads—even that awful Limp Bizkit cover. Who do The Who think they are, traveling into the future and ripping off the genius of Fred Durst and making his songs better? The Who that’s who. What?

Now go, cat, go!

Thanks yonicsooth. Looks like you've won.

You get a review of Boris's Pink and a set of complimentary ginzsu knives. But your not allowed to reseath them until they've drawn blood.

Thanks for the gig news. I'll try and make this one. Are you going?

New Albums of the Week are here.
