LUBRICATED GOAT: IN THE RAW (VIDEO)
December 14th 2006 10:00
WARNING: THIS VIDEO CONTAINS FOOTAGE OF THE MALE WANG & BUTTOCKS! YOU MUST BE OVER 18 AND HAVE EYES TO WATCH THIS VIDEO
Here’s a li’l video clip from the vaults of Australia’s criminally unappreciated garage rock past. Sydney’s Lubricated Goat performed this tune live (although they lipscynced—and badly) on ABC TV’s Blah Blah Blah program in 1988. Blah Blah Blah was hosted by Andrew Denton who is now quite well-known and respected for his Enough Rope talk show and his documentary on the religious right: God On My Side which both demonstrate his intelligent and probing interview style. But back in the day, he hosted a show that provided this kind of entertainment on an episode about censorship, obviously to much media uproar. I don’t really want to speak ill of Rove McManus after all he’s been through lately, but I can’t imagine him taking a chance like this on national TV, especially these days.
When they appeared on the show, Lubricated Goat made the bold decision to play their song “In The Raw”—IN THE RAW (now that’s lateral thinkin’ for ya). This song can be found on the band’s full-length debut: Paddock of Love (1988).
This performance saw the band splinter, due in part to the pressure of audiences and venues expecting them to play nude or not at all. It was a publicity stunt that backfired, but this is still a funny clip and a great example of Australia’s raunchy grunge sound of the ‘80s. Actually, Lubricated Goat drummer Martin Bland played in Bloodloss and Monkeywrench with Mark Arm of Mudhoney, and bassist Guy Maddison is now an official member of the Mudhoney lineup. Stu Spasm was also once married to Kat Bjelland of Babes In Toyland and played in a band with her called Crunt. Apparently Stu now resides in New York and still fronts a version of Lubricated Goat.
And here’s something for trivia buffs and lovers of serial killers who dress up like clowns and kill young Hispanic and Asian boys. In the background are some paintings of clowns done by the notorious John Wayne Gacy.

I want to find out more about these guys. I've read quite a bit and heard not a whole lot. But this clip is just one of those things that brings a smile to my face whenever it turns up on Rage. And yes, their sound is really something else: so sleazy, so churning and raunchy and sick.
And the wangs are there to be found, if you really want them to be.

I love that Steve Kilbey quote. I ran into it while hanging ten on my internet surfboard (how come I'm the only one who has one of these? Everyone else I talk to who uses the internet keeps mentioning something about a 'modem'. What the hell is that?).
That documentary looks awesome. Do you know if it's being screened or if it has been screened on public television?

Now if only more female rockers would follow suit (or no suit, or underwear).
And no Melissa Etheridge. I know you read my blog but I wasn't referring to you.

I will leave the post here though, so that we may relive all the good times we had.
