MODEST MOUSE TOUR AUSTRALIA IN DECEMBER & JANUARY
November 16th 2006 03:00
Here are some Youtube goodies: live performances from Modest Mouse to whet your appetites.
Modest Mouse “Float On” live on Craig Kilborn (whoever the hell that is)
>
Modest Mouse “Ocean Breathes Salty” live on Late Night With Conan (I know this guy, he’s the barbarian, right?)
Those clips are tunes from their last album: 2004's Good News For People Who Love Bad News. Despite what some die-hard fans might tell you, its a wonderful trip through dreamy indie pop; shout-along Pixies-style anthems, southern-fried funk; and lurching, Waitsian carnivale. I’m sure they’ll be playin’ plenty of tunes off that album, and their other masterworks like The Lonesome Crowded West (1997) and The Moon & Antarctica (2000), as well as showcasing material from their new album We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, which is slated for release early next year. Add to that the fact that legendary Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr will be joining the band, and what ya get is something approaching the best indie rock happening in these parts since the original lineup of Dinosaur Jr toured here earlier this year.
The band are appearing at the already sold out Falls Festival, but have graciously decided to do side shows for their first voyage to the land of Oz. Modest Mouse seem to have quite the following though, and I’ve gotta feeling this show’s gonna sell out quickly. Get in fast. Below are the dates:
Melbourne: 29 December; The Palace
Lorne: 30 December; Falls Festival (SOLD OUT)
Marion Bay: 31 December; Falls Festival (SOLD OUT)
Brisbane: 2 January; The Tivoli
Sydney: 3 January; Enmore Theatre
Busselton: 6 January; Sir Stewart Bovell Park

But have you noticed a trend, lately, for lyrics to be unimportant? Or to be important in a different way?

I think with indie music, the lyrics tend to be a bit more obscure, or abstact, or open to interpretation. I suppose Nirvana were the first band to open me up to the idea that lyrics didn't need to make any sort of narrative sense, but could paint a picture or impression, or just sound really good together. I like this approach to lyric writing, and its something I appreciate in bands like the Pixies, the Jesus Lizard, and Modest Mouse.
Are you suggesting that "Float On" has unimportant lyrics or lyrics that are important in a different way? I haven't given them much though to tell you the truth but would be interested in hearing your thoughts.

I rambled about this topic of nonsense lyrics in a post a while back...
About Modest Mouse... I dunno. I had the general impression that it was more about the feeling you get when the guy's going, "And we'll all float on all right"; he doesn't sing in a way that's easily understandable to me.
On inspecting the lyrics, I guess they're far more sensical than Nirvana after all.
I backed my car into a cop car the other day
Well he just drove off sometimes life's ok
I ran my mouth off a bit too much oh what can i say
Well you just laughed it off it was all ok
And we'll all float on ok
And we'll all float on ok
And we'll all float on ok
And we'll all float on any way well
Well, a fake Jamaican took every last dime with a scam
It was worth it just to learn some sleight-of-hand
Bad news comes don't you worry even when it lands
Good news will work its way to all them plans
We both got fired on the exactly the same day
Well we'll float on good news is on the way
And we'll all float on ok
And we'll all float on ok
And we'll all float on ok
And we'll all float on alright
Already we'll all float on
Now don't worry we'll all float on
Alright already we'll all float on
Alright don't worry we'll all float on
And we'll all float on alright
Already we'll all float on
Aliright don't worry even if things end up a bit to heavy
we'll all float on alright
Already we'll all float on
Alright already we'll all float on
Ok don't worry we'll all float on
Even if things get heavy we'll all float on
Alright already we'll all float on
Don't you worry we'll all float on
All float on

"Come Together"
"Here come old flattop he come grooving up slowly
He got joo-joo eyeball he one holy roller
He got hair down to his knee
Got to be a joker he just do what he please
He wear no shoeshine he got toe-jam football
He got monkey finger he shoot coca-cola
He say "I know you, you know me"
One thing I can tell you is you got to be free
Come together right now over me
He bag production he got walrus gumboot
He got Ono sideboard he one spinal cracker
He got feet down below his knee
Hold you in his armchair you can feel his disease
Come together right now over me
He roller-coaster he got early warning
He got muddy water he one mojo filter
He say "One and one and one is three"
Got to be good-looking 'cause he's so hard to see
Come together right now over me"
Personally I'm glad that I can dismiss this song's meaning as pure nonsense, because the alternative is almost unthinkable. The images conjured by the line: 'come together, right now, over me', particularly when sung by Paul McCartney, are too horrifying to ponder.
"Float On" is pretty straightforward but still has some nice, odd imagery that I enjoy. The lyrics are hard to understand when sung, but sometimes lyrics are just needed for the singer to have something to say and stop it from being an instrumental tune. It's often the combined feeling of the instruments and the vocals that create the desired impression, regardless of the lyrics.

Yeah, as the saying goes, I'm never going to hear that song in the same way again.
Thanks a lot Hellvis.
