THE BIRTHDAY PARTY: NICK THE STRIPPER (VIDEO)

Prayers On Fire (1981)
I thought I’d use my newfound Youtube powers to share a li'l video clip with all y'all, from Australia’s most incendiary post punk band: the Birthday Party. This is possibly one of the most insane videos I have ever seen, which goes perfectly with their lurching, sleazy bastard of a tune “Nick The Stripper” from what I think is their best album Prayers On Fire (1981).

The Birthday Party “Nick The Stripper” promo video.

It’s particularly scary given that it was filmed in a Melbourne dump, apparently with a cast of extras from a local insane asylum. True or not, the clip has a demented atmosphere that comes off like a carnivalesque cross between Night Of The Living Dead and Lord Of The Flies.

And for all y'all who know Nick Cave as a smooth crooner who dresses in spiffy suits, see him here wearing nothing but a filthy loin cloth and the words 'Hell' and 'Porca Dio' emblazoned across his bony chest. Oh, the horror.

Awesome video. I love Nick Cave, probably the best (and only good thing) to come out of Australia musically for a long, long time.

Especially Murder Ballads. Favorite Australian CD.

Over and out,
Kylar

Thanks for checking in Kylar.

I prefer this early stuff of Nick's to his more recent outings. I wouldn't agree that there's nothing good coming out of Oz, I think you just have to dig a little deeper to find it. Bird Blobs are probably my favourite recent band. They do have a sound that is similar to the Birthday Party, but are still original.

Haven't heard Murder Ballads, but have heard quite a few tunes off it. My fave Bad Seeds album is probably Your Funeral My Trial, or Let Love In.

Hi Hope,

That's WONDERFUL! Not that you were freaked out, but that stuff like this can still have its desired impact. I suppose the things that attract me to it are the same things that repulse you.

Thanks for checking in.
