The Beasts of Bourbon are one rough bunch of booze-swillin’, blooze-rockin’ muthahs. “Chase The Dragon” is a favourite of mine by this Aussie supergroup, this particular lineup featuring Tex Perkins (The Cruel Sea), Spencer P Jones (The Johnnys), Kim Salmon (The Scientists, The Surrealists), Brian Hooper (The Surrealists), and Tony Pola (The Surrealists).

“Chase The Dragon” has a raw, gristley guitar riff that’s like chewin’ an overcooked steak at an Aussie barbecue with Tex singin’ at his meanest and dirtiest. This is tough music made by bad men, and is probably the best song about smuggling heroin from Kampuchea in a plastic bag up your ass, ever. Enjoy!

Oh yeah, the video is pretty basic, but there’s nothing cooler than Spencer P Jones playing his guitar with a cigarette hangin’ outta the corner of his mouth. Also, there's some cool, cheap, kaleidescopic effects, plus this should’ve won an ARIA award or something for best use of Glad Wrap in a music video.

WARNING: THIS VIDEO CONTAINS THE WORD ‘MOTHERFUCKER’ AS DOES THIS WARNING, BUT IT’S A BIT LATE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT NOW ISN’T IT?

Thankyaverymuch ladies 'n' gentlemen right now I gotta tell ya 'bout, the fabulous, most grooovey, Blues Explosion (Ugh!), Blues Explosion (Ugh!), Yayah! (Ugh!).

Sorry ‘bout that intro ladies ‘n’ gentlemen, but the Blues Explosion were one of my favourite bands right up until they recorded the genre-defying, cut ‘n’ paste extravaganza Acme (1998), after which things began to go downhill like an unattended baby carriage. Back then, all their songs were about their favourite thing in the world. And do ya know what that thing was ladies ‘n’ gentlemen? That’s right: THE BLUES EXPLOSION. Once they stopped believing in themselves and tried to write tunes about stuff other than themselves, they lost a tiny bit of their souls.

But, after dissin’ on the JSBX in my Yeah Yeah Yeahs review I thought it right and proper for me to share with you one of my favourite videos of there’s, cuz I still hold a special ‘n’ dear place in my heart for their gritty, organic gumbo of blooze punk mixed with flourishes of hip hop, soul, rockabilly, white noise, funk, and a whole heap of other cool-ass shit. They fit somewhere alongside Beck and the Beastie Boys, but with more of a down ‘n’ dirty, primal vibe that I personally love. Also, they have the greatest frontman since Elvis, James Brown, and Mick Jagger combined. But enough hyperbole. Here’s the video:

”Dang” video from the album Orange (1994)

Orange (1994)
The song itself is one of the weirder, noisier cuts from their excellent album Orange, and doesn’t actually seem to be about the Blues Explosion as such, but it's not like it's really about anything at all, so it doesn’t matter. It’s got a repetitive li’l southern-fried guitar line, crazy distorted harmonica, wailin’ theremin, and Jon Spencer’s 1950s whoopin' 'n' hollerin' that gives way to tinny screaming. This kind of thing is what the Earache Hotel is all about.

I love low budget videos that look like the band have just spent a weekend with a handycam, got real liquored up, and had a whole lotta fun. This is one of those, with Spencer in a silver suit, flying saucers that look like they’re straight outta Plan 9 From Outer Space, the most evil alfoil-clad alien attacker with pointy boobs since Madonna, one of the greatest teleportation effects in the history of cinema, and Vishnu. You’ve gotta have Vishnu.

LUBRICATED GOAT: IN THE RAW (VIDEO)

December 14th 2006 10:00
WARNING: THIS VIDEO CONTAINS FOOTAGE OF THE MALE WANG & BUTTOCKS! YOU MUST BE OVER 18 AND HAVE EYES TO WATCH THIS VIDEO

Here’s a li’l video clip from the vaults of Australia’s criminally unappreciated garage rock past. Sydney’s Lubricated Goat performed this tune live (although they lipscynced—and badly) on ABC TV’s Blah Blah Blah program in 1988. Blah Blah Blah was hosted by Andrew Denton who is now quite well-known and respected for his Enough Rope talk show and his documentary on the religious right: God On My Side which both demonstrate his intelligent and probing interview style. But back in the day, he hosted a show that provided this kind of entertainment on an episode about censorship, obviously to much media uproar. I don’t really want to speak ill of Rove McManus after all he’s been through lately, but I can’t imagine him taking a chance like this on national TV, especially these days

APHEX TWIN: COME TO DADDY (VIDEO)

December 5th 2006 10:20
Time to share another video with all y’all: my brothers ‘n’ sisters in rock. But this ain’t no rock video. Nosiree. It’s goldarned electronic music, but not the type you will find slappers and date rapists dancin’ to in trendy nightclubs. Sure, Aphex Twin has been known to produce music for people on ecstasy to enjoy because they are incapable of experiencing true human love, but this tune is weird and experimental electronic music that would probably cause some sort of seizure if you tried to cut a groove rug to it. “Come To Daddy” is a hateful and downright nasty track that sounds like it was spewed out of the bowels of hell.

If you haven’t seen this video before, be warned: it is not for the faint-hearted or the lily-livered

Prayers On Fire
Prayers On Fire (1981)
I thought I’d use my newfound Youtube powers to share a li'l video clip with all y'all, from Australia’s most incendiary post punk band: the Birthday Party. This is possibly one of the most insane videos I have ever seen, which goes perfectly with their lurching, sleazy bastard of a tune “Nick The Stripper” from what I think is their best album Prayers On Fire (1981).
